During the Second World War, the Germans occupied the commune of Troarn, located south-west of the Dives marshes. The 5th company of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 125 of the 21 Panzer-Division set up its command posts there, headed by Oberleutnant Brandenburg.
The 3rd Para Brigade of the British 6th Airborne Division, led by Major Tim Roseveare, was tasked with securing the left flank of their bridgehead, in particular by destroying the Troarn bridge. Despite numerous parachute-related drownings in the marshes and German counterattacks, the Allies succeeded in destroying the bridge just before withdrawing. Nevertheless, the town remained in German hands.
It was Operation Goodwood on July 18, 1944, aimed at recapturing the city of Caen from the east, that changed the situation in Troarn. It wasn't until Operation Paddle on August 17, 1944, that the commune was liberated and returned to Allied hands.
